This is Dunes

It takes an extraordinary design team to blend cutting-edge technology with sinuous forms. The unique structure of Feadship supports an in-house creative think tank called Studio De Voogt. Together with the Knowledge & Innovation department, they are a true imaginarium, design topics, materials and global trends considered against the backdrop of the natural world and multi-cultural influences. Almost every year since 2006, Feadship has forecast the future with an exciting concept yacht. While none have ever touched the water as a complete entity, individual elements are regularly integrated into full-custom projects, sparking discussion and providing inspiration for the future direction of superyachts.

Inspired by Nature

Dunes explores how natural forces can shape the future of superyachts. Developed by Studio De Voogt and Feadship's Knowledge & Innovation team, the concept translates wind, shade and landscape into intelligent design solutions.

A tower that turns with the wind

The sculpted tower atop Dunes rotates to align with prevailing winds, creating a natural airflow through the yacht. By drawing warm air out and inviting cooler air in, it enables passive ventilation.

Ask the right questions

For the 2023 Concept Design, Studio De Voogt pondered a series of crucial questions: how to enhance interior-exterior flow, challenge static yacht layouts and conserve energy for a Net Zero impact? A Feadship concept design is not about shapes alone — it is about advancing yachting's story with fresh eyes. The metaphor the team found was timeless: dunes, where land, sea and sky meet in asymmetrical beauty. Could a yacht capture that asymmetry from above? Could spaces flow like dune valleys, breaking the monotony of conventional layouts? Why not feature shaded promenades and cascading terraces in natural materials? Studio De Voogt's journey began by envisioning a seagoing lifestyle driven by clean technology and minimal environmental impact, and Dunes was the answer.

“Imaginarium: a place devoted to stimulating and cultivating the imagination.”

Oases within an oasis

Just like a desert oasis or a tide pool on a beach, surprises are among the most delightful experiences at sea. Following the idea of organic shapes, the designers of Dunes have scattered three pools, and a sunken bow seating area, across the yacht to provide intimate spaces for private relaxation. Broad overhangs creating shade need not make a large yacht look like a block of flats. Studio De Voogt found inspiration in the undulations of natural dunes, creating shaded side decks perfect for a leisurely promenade.

Cold core: a hot idea that's totally cool

Like a desert house, the interior of Dunes is divided into temperature zones. Sleeping quarters are kept at 19-20°C, social areas at 22-23°C and the upper deck pavilion at 24-25°C. The pavilion is passively cooled using excess chilled air drawn from other parts of the vessel below. The rotating mast aligns with the wind direction, creating a low-pressure zone that naturally pulls air through the yacht. Combined with generous overhangs and high-performance insulation, Feadship anticipates a 35% annual reduction in HVAC energy consumption.

The new look of Luxury

Teak, once revered for yachts, faces increasing scarcity, rising prices and growing environmental concerns. An international treaty now restricts its import, requiring a responsible shift. Feadship introduces two new luxury decking systems on Dunes. Maple islands around furniture provide a warm, sustainable alternative with the feel of traditional teak. Other deck surfaces use an eco-friendly resin embedded with tiny glass or stone chips — flowing seamlessly without the limitations of planking, requiring no harsh cleaning, no annual sanding and no replacement every fifteen years. A practical and beautiful choice for the future.
